The fountain stood in a shaft of light that fell through the cave from a gap in the ceiling, high overhead. More than three times the height of a man it stood, a tower of ancient marble, blue-veined, like cheese. Moss clung to the base. Bird droppings streaked the rim of the bowl. A thin curtain of water cascaded down from the edge of the gap. Most of it boiled off and floated away through the shadows, but enough reached the fountain the bowl overflowed, bubbling over the side and spattering over the rocks. I reached out one mailed hand, unthinking, to catch some of the spillage in my palm. "I wouldn't." Pieter caught my wrist. "Why not?"
